No Scalpel Vasectomy

When you are blessed with a family, but no longer desire additional children, no-scalpel vasectomy is a great choice for permanent sterilization.  Even so, many men can be nervous about this procedure.  Dr. Dan French certainly understands this and will take the time needed to explain the procedure and answer any remaining questions at your office consultation.  You will leave that visit feeling prepared and comfortable with your choice for a no-scalpel vasectomy.

Safe, effective, and minimally invasive:

When compared to other forms of permanent sterilization, such as tubal ligation for women, no scalpel vasectomy is safer, less invasive, and as equally effective.  It is also more cost effective.  For these reasons, each year, thousands of men in the United States choose to have a vasectomy.

The procedure:

No scalpel vasectomy is a brief, office based procedure that prevents sperm from reaching the semen fluid, resulting in permanent sterilization.  Most often, the procedure is comfortably performed with local anesthesia.  On occasion IV sedation is used.

The vas deferens is the tube that carries sperm away from the testicle.  During no scalpel vasectomy, the vas deferens is delivered through the scrotal skin.  A segment of the vas deferens is removed and the remaining ends are cauterized to seal them shut.  This is repeated on the other side, but often using the same tiny skin opening.  A single dissolvable stitch is used to close the skin opening and the procedure is finished.  Afterwards, it is best to best to ice the area periodically.  Detailed post-operative instructions will be provided at the time of your initial consultation.

Ease your mind:

Nervous about the procedure?  That’s OK, it’ only natural.  Rest assured that Dr. French is experienced in performing no-scalpel vasectomy and his competent but relaxed demeanor will make the experience as pleasant as possible.  Patients often comment that the experience was “not nearly as tough as I imagined”.

Really nervous about the procedure?  For patients who prefer something other than local anesthesia, Dr. French can arrange for an anesthesiologist to administer conscious sedation for their no-scalpel vasectomy.  This is safely performed in the on-site surgical suite for maximum convenience.  Patients quickly awaken to find their procedure is already finished.
